107th Anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement Story Video Concert: Great Youth of Korea 1919

[Performance Introduction] In commemoration of the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement, we present a performance honoring the noble spirit of that historic day. This performance departs from the repetitive government-led annual commemorative events and aims to shed light on lesser-known figures beyond Yu Gwan-sun, the independence activist commonly taught in textbooks to general citizens. The protagonist is Kim Hyang-hwa, a kisaeng (traditional courtesan) who led the March 1st Independence Movement in the Suwon region and was imprisoned together with Yu Gwan-sun at Seodaemun Prison, where she played a leading role in organizing independence movement activities within the prison walls. Through video footage and art song concerts, we will dramatically present the process of these women's noble sacrifices during Japanese colonial rule that ultimately secured national independence, alongside how successive generations of young people have built today's Korea—a nation recognized worldwide—through nothing but sweat and passion.
