Pianist Ahn Ryeo-hong, who is preparing for a solo recital at the Sejong Cultural Center Chamber Hall on May 27, delivered this message. Pianist Ahn Ryeo-hong graduated from Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School, then entered Yonsei University College of Music as an exceptionally talented practical musician, earning her bachelor's degree. She later studied abroad and graduated from Dresden State University of Music with a master's degree and highest performance diploma (Konzertexamen) with unanimous top marks. Beginning with her return solo recital at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei in 2023, she has met audiences each year with unique and distinctive themes. This recital presents a structure that alternates between Chopin's ballades and impromptus, one by one. It explores the musical logic and connectivity stemming from the essential differences between the two genres. If the ballade is the "great pillar" that constructs Chopin's narrative, the impromptu can be called a "fragment of time" in which momentary emotions are condensed. Through the alternation of these two genres, pianist Ahn Ryeo-hong introduces the overall flow of Chopin's life and the emotions experienced in that process from a three-dimensional perspective. Chopin's ballades are grand epics built on the background of the era's dark period of exile from his homeland, Poland. From No. 1 to No. 4, the tragic weight and inner emotions deepen. In contrast, the impromptus are works born from the splendor of salon culture with a freedom characteristic of piano music, but gradually transition to introspective quietude. Pianist Ahn Ryeo-hong stated, "The alternation of ballades and impromptus does not mean contrast or opposition, but becomes a narrative examining Chopin's life through stories and emotions." She added, "I hope it will be a time to understand music with the heart through Chopin's four confessions." First Confession of Youth - Emotion of the Moment Pianist Ahn Ryeo-hong introduces Chopin's Ballade No. 1 and Impromptu No. 1 as "youth." No. 1, in which Chopin first introduced the ballade form to piano music, was composed during his exile in Paris shortly after leaving his homeland, Poland, with deep sentiments of loss and resistance. The nostalgia and anger depicted by the young Chopin coexist with lyrical yet explosive energy. Impromptu No. 1 was composed in 1837 during the height of Paris salon culture, the first work in which Chopin, who enjoyed improvisational performances, recorded momentary inspiration on sheet music. Even in its freely flowing melody, refined formal beauty remains alive. Passion Within Tranquility - Hidden Anxiety The following Ballade No. 2 reveals Chopin's dual inner self through the time spent with his beloved George Sand and his deteriorating health. Latent anxiety beneath the surface tranquility is sharply contrasted. Impromptu No. 2 is the largest in scale and structurally most complex of the four impromptus. It moves away from simple salon music and contains a narrative closer to a ballade. Chopin's complex inner psychology blurs the boundaries between the two genres. Memory of Love - Emotion Preserved in Song While Part 1 is dominated by passionate music, Part 2 delves deeper into a more depressed inner world. Pianist Ahn Ryeo-hong places Ballade No. 3 and Impromptu No. 3 together, depicting both Chopin as a human being and Chopin as a musician. Ballade No. 3, composed during a period of stability after settling in Paris, displays bright and elegant colors, yet beneath lies delicately hidden sadness. The rupture in his relationship with George Sand evokes the transformation of love and reminiscence. Impromptu No. 3 is a late work by Chopin, revealing his struggle with his own identity and inner self. While the surface appears to flow gracefully, the harmonic language within harbors an atmosphere heralding late Romanticism. Deepened Reflection - Lingering Afterimage The fourth works of each genre are performed with the impromptu first, followed by the ballade for a fitting finale. In Impromptu No. 4, fragments of emotion gather to complete the landscape of Chopin's inner world. A masterpiece condensing the raw emotions Chopin wished to hide, it has become one of the most popular Chopin works today. Ballade No. 4 is considered the pinnacle of Chopin's work and a masterpiece of piano literature. Completed during a period when his health was deteriorating and his relationship with Sand was wavering, it becomes a comprehensive summary of Chopin's musical journey in which premonitions of death and reflection on life coexist. The flow, beginning with deep contemplation and ending in an unstoppable whirlwind, well reflects Chopin's wavering emotions. Ballades & Impromptus, Four Confessions Chopin as expressed by pianist Ahn Ryeo-hong is not a simple enumeration of works, but constitutes a complete narrative. The journey from young Chopin to the gravity of his final years helps audiences interpret Chopin's music in a "human" way.
