Daejeon World Art Song Festival, Winterreise

[Performance Introduction] The "2026 Daejeon World Art Song Festival" has been organized to convey beauty, genuine comfort, and rich artistic imagination to audiences navigating contemporary society through art songs, which represent the meeting of refined poetry and music. Through poetry and music that delicately examine the human inner self, we aim to embody the essential value of art songs on stage and share healthy cultural sentiment and poetic depth with Daejeon citizens. This performance features Franz Schubert's representative song cycle "Winterreise, D. 911 (Winter Journey)." Set to music by Wilhelm Müller's poetry, this work depicts the journey of a heartbroken wanderer setting out alone on a winter night, encountering solitude, loss, reminiscence, and despair through 24 songs. It is regarded as a masterpiece representing German Romantic art songs, embodying Schubert's profound musical expression and delicate insight into the human inner world. Pianist Professor Yang Ki-hoon and Baritone Professor Kim Hyung-ki aim to present the art song world contained in "Winter Journey" based on profound musical interpretation and delicate phrasing. Through this performance where voice and piano engage in intimate dialogue, following one person's lonely journey and inner transformation, we plan to convey to audiences the depth and beauty of Schubert's art songs. We hope this performance will introduce Daejeon citizens more closely to the beauty of Schubert's art songs and serve as an opportunity to continuously enjoy high-quality art songs in the region. Furthermore, through the special moment when poetry and music become one, we wish this to be a meaningful time for rediscovering the sensitivity and imagination we have momentarily forgotten in our daily lives.
