Gyeongseong Detective Agency: Jeol-yeongdo, Find the Lost Shadow! [Busan] (11.07)

[PERFORMANCE INTRODUCTION] The history and legends of Yeongdo come alive through original opera! Yeongdo Culture and Arts Center presents the original opera [Gyeongseong興信所: Jeol-Yeongdo, Finding the Lost Shadow!], selected for the 2026 Culture and Arts Center Specialization Support Program, at Bongrae Hall on November 6th. This work is an original opera created based on Yeongdo's former name 'Jeol-Yeongdo' and the region's history and folklore. Set in Busan's Yeongdo in 1947, right after liberation, the story follows Hong Gildong, the director of Gyeongseong興信所, and his assistant Rolex as they investigate a mysterious incident where people's shadows disappear one by one, uncovering hidden secrets and mysteries. The production combines mystery, suspense, fantasy, and comedy elements with opera to enhance popular appeal. It utilizes traditional Korean instruments, Western chamber music, and electronic sounds to uniquely express the atmosphere of Yeongdo as a port city right after liberation. Additionally, local spaces such as Bongrae Market alley, cliffs, and underground caves will be recreated on stage and through video projections to present scenes where reality and fantasy intersect. Through this work, Yeongdo Culture and Arts Center plans to reinterpret the region's history and folklore as contemporary performance art content and develop it into a signature creative repertoire that embodies Yeongdo's unique identity.
