About

[PERFORMANCE INTRODUCTION] Shigeki Okubo, a drummer and composer from Kyushu, is an artist who has garnered attention for his refined sense of rhythm and lyrical compositional world. His music naturally intersects the improvisation of jazz with the sophisticated sensibility unique to Japanese music, adding an original texture to contemporary jazz trio sound. In this project, Okubo leads the trio as both leader and musical center, presenting a profound ensemble performance alongside pianist Jo Yun-sung and bassist Jeon Chang-min. The program centers on Okubo's original compositions, weaving together film scores, jazz standards, and pieces born from distinct cultural landscapes into a single narrative. The transparent lyricism of Edvard Grieg's Arietta, a Northern European Romantic composer; the refined sensibility of Minako Matsubara's music representing Japanese city pop; and the sensory soundscapes of contemporary Japanese music producer Tomita Lab are all reinterpreted as a new trio language within Okubo's rhythmic imagination. Okubo's drumming functions beyond simply maintaining time as a central axis that calibrates the flow of music. The flexible dynamics, delicate touch, and the tension and space formed through spontaneous interaction further expand the trio sound into a more multidimensional experience. The three musicians maintain a dense musical dialogue while respecting each other's musical space, presenting the aesthetics of contemporary jazz trio that transcends genre and cultural boundaries. This performance takes place at ERUM Gallery, Jeonju's representative performance venue, where audiences will experience a sophisticated musical landscape where rhythm, lyricism, and improvisation intersect organically.
