ABOUT THE WORK
"Korean Folk Songs Reimagined: Cello, Electronic Music, and Media Art"
SYNOPSIS
〈Minyo Cello〉 is a performance that reinterprets familiar folk song melodies through the timbre of cello and expands their resonance through electronic music and media art.
Experience folk songs reborn with a new sensibility right now, in this moment.
DIRECTORIAL CONCEPT
This performance does not aim to recreate tradition, but rather explores how tradition can come alive and move anew in this current era.
The cello becomes the central axis that most delicately embraces the sentiment of folk songs, while electronic music transforms their resonance with new textures and rhythms. The visual elements on stage expand the emotional flow created by the music throughout the entire space, weaving sound and image into a single experience.
Through this performance, I hope audiences will experience "the moment when something old is heard and seen through a new sensibility." While folk melodies are voices from the past, when they are reopened and expanded within today's sensibility, tradition becomes not merely a heritage to preserve, but a living language that continues to move and breathe here and now. - Im Yee Hwan
CURATORIAL CONCEPT
In 2023, 〈Minyo Cello〉presented traditional melodies in a new way through the combination of cello and band. This time, it returns as an expanded performance that deepens both musical structure and visual expression, allowing audiences to experience sound and image simultaneously.
The combination of cello and electronic music serves as a natural bridge connecting tradition and modernity, past and present, while media art helps audiences spatially perceive the flow and emotion of the music. Through this, audiences do not simply listen to folk songs but experience how tradition can be reinterpreted and expanded through today's sensibility and technology.
〈Minyo Cello〉 is a performance that demonstrates how creative works rooted in tradition can embody contemporary relevance and emotion, and how musical, technological, and visual elements can organically combine to create a new language of the stage.
