Seoul Philharmonic Marcus Stenz and Vadim Gluzman ①

[PROGRAM] Brahms, Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77 Walton, Symphony No. 1 in B-flat minor * Program and performers are subject to change. Though only two works grace the stage, they could not be more substantial. Marcus Stenz, who served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra from 2017 to 2021, returns after a considerable absence with these significant compositions. The first half features Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto. While Brahms began composing under the influence of Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, which dominated the era, he created a work imbued with his distinctive symphonic spirit. Violinist Vadim Gluzman, who has performed in Korea multiple times and previously collaborated with the Seoul Philharmonic in 2019, takes the solo part. Following this is William Walton's Symphony No. 1, a work that fully demonstrates the power of the symphony experienced in the preceding Brahms composition. Bearing the influence of Sibelius, who first explored what the symphony could accomplish in the twentieth century, this work pays homage to the traditions established by classical music throughout, evident in the contrapuntal movements of the final movement and elsewhere.
