On Grouping Three Works as One: Regarding the Op. 30 Set
In 1802, Beethoven faced the irreversible reality of hearing loss in Heiligenstadt and wrote his famous testament. The three sonatas (Op. 30) composed that very year paradoxically display a far more intimate and contemplative musical language than before. At a different juncture from the brilliant and extroverted virtuosic path leading toward the Kreutzer Sonata (Op. 47), these three works each examine the "inner self" in different ways. One through lyricism, one through passion and silence, one through humor and ease. The title of today's program, "Inner Landscapes," is chosen for this very reason — to sketch together three entirely different inner maps that emerged from the same year, the same time of crisis.
